4 Tips for Navigating Life Changes During the COVID-19 Pandemic

November 13, 2020

Whether you’re a nurse working overtime, a parent trying to homeschool your kids while working from home, or a college student completing your final semester online, the COVID-19 pandemic has touched all of our lives in some way. Making changes in a pandemic could be challenging or rough. Read here are 4 tips for making life changes during a pandemic.

It can be hard to embrace circumstances that you didn’t choose for yourself, but with the right mindset, you can begin to see the positive aspects of the changes brought on by the pandemic. These tips will help you adjust to the various shifts in your routine.

Making Life Changes During A Pandemic

Moving Forward With Essential Business

Although many industries have practically closed down for the time being, some business can’t be put off until later. For example, construction workers are still allowed to carry out repairs and renovations in many states. Laundromats have remained open, and even some daycares are still operating with restrictions.

If you’re in the market for a new home. You know that you can’t always delay moving, either, and this pandemic doesn’t mean you have to stop house hunting. Thankfully, Redfin explains you can take care of many important steps of this process with your computer and phone. Like applying for a mortgage and researching safe neighborhoods. Plus, you can “tour” homes with 3D walkthroughs, video-chat with home sellers, and even attend casual, virtual open houses. It’s not quite the same as visiting in person, but these options are much safer!

Giving a Pet a Home

Maybe you’ve been thinking about adopting a pet since you have so much free time on your hands, or maybe you’ve already rescued a dog or cat from your local shelter. There are a lot of perks to being a pet owner - having an animal companion around during quarantine can definitely lift your mood!

But if you’re planning to get a pet, you’ll need to prepare accordingly, because this is a long-term commitment. For instance, you’ll have to purchase healthy food and safe, effective cleaning supplies. You’ll also need toys, especially if you’re getting a cat - otherwise, they might take out their boredom on your furniture! Spend some time researching high-quality brands and comparing prices so that you get the most bang for your buck.

New Career Path

Many people have suddenly found themselves unemployed or working remotely. If you’re having second thoughts about your former career path, you’re not alone. It’s not too late to pursue a position with a new company or even go into business for yourself. Taking the leap is scary, but it’s often worth the risk.

Job hunting from home will likely involve giving interviews over the phone or video chat. If you’re moving forward with a Skype interview, the Balance recommends closing out any other applications, avoiding interruptions, and paying attention to your body language. Stay positive and focus on the future. You’ll be amazed at how much your own attitude in an interview can influence your success!

If you’d like to change up your career completely, it’s possible to go back to school remotely. Many online programs allow you to earn a degree quicker than if you were to attend a traditional institution. Look for a degree that has real-world applications like one in business management, accounting, or IT management.

Self-Sufficiency

With hair salons, gyms, restaurants, and bars shut down, you’re probably becoming more self-sufficient when it comes to certain tasks that you would previously pay others to do for you. There’s a good chance that you’re spending more time in the kitchen, and you might have even set up a few herb planters in your window sills.

If you’re learning to cook new dishes, Delish recommends taking notes on recipes you like, seasoning and tasting meals as you go, and adding a little extra salt to everything! Becoming more self-sufficient can be challenging at first, but over time, you’ll realize the value of your new skill sets.

It’s safe to say that most people have seen their plans for this year change drastically since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Accepting that everything we had envisioned for 2020 might not work out can be discouraging. But if you look at the situation from a different perspective, you might see how these changes could actually improve your life in the long run.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about these 4 tips for making life changes during a pandemic.
